The GLP-1 Revolution: What you actually need to know 💉
GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) have become the hottest topic in health. While they feel like they’ve popped up overnight, they’ve actually been used safely for over 20 years to manage Type 2 Diabetes.
As a naturopath, I find this "revolution" fascinating, but as someone who looks at the whole person, I’m seeing a few things in the fine print that we need to talk about. If you’re using these tools, I want you to use them effectively - and that means protecting your foundation.
What’s actually happening in your body?
GLP-1 is a natural hormone your gut makes to tell your brain you’re full. These medications are essentially a "long-acting" version of that signal.
They help your cells use sugar for fuel rather than storing it as fat.
They slow down your stomach so food stays there longer, making you feel full for hours.
They quiet the "food noise" in your brain so you aren't constantly thinking about your next snack.
The Benefits (Beyond the scale)
It’s not just about weight. These medications do more than just shift a number on the scale. For many, they act as a massive "reset" button for the body. When we look at blood work, we often see a "domino effect" of health wins.
The stuff no one tells you:
Rapid weight loss is a bit of a shock to the system. Here are the main areas I’m focusing on with my clients:
1. Why Muscle Matters More Than Fat: When you eat significantly less, your body gets desperate for fuel and starts "eating" its own muscle mass. This is a big deal because muscle is your metabolic engine. If you lose muscle, your metabolism slows down, making it much harder to keep the weight off once you stop the medication. Plus, the heart is a muscle too - we want to keep it strong, not stressed.
2. Prioritising Your Daily Elimination Since these meds physically slow your gut down, things can get... stagnant. If you aren't having regular, daily bowel motions, your body starts reabsorbing things it was trying to get rid of - like old estrogen. This can lead to mood swings, skin issues, heavier menstrual cycles, and that sluggish feeling. A healthy gut also needs a "natural clearing rhythm" to sweep out bacteria; without it, you're at risk for SIBO (bacterial overgrowth), which leads to that intense, painful bloating.
3. The Nutrient Gap When your appetite is suppressed, it’s really hard to get enough "fuel" for your cells. It’s a bit of a paradox: even though weight is coming off quickly, your body might actually be starving for nutrients. When you’re eating such small amounts, it’s incredibly hard to hit the targets your cells need to function. I often see people losing weight but also losing their hair quality and energy because their 'internal tank' is running on empty.
4. The Mood Connection It is often surprising to learn that about 95% of your serotonin - the chemical that helps regulate your mood and sleep - is actually produced in your gut. Because these medications fundamentally change how your gut signals the rest of your body, they can sometimes impact how you feel emotionally. I’ve had clients describe a sense of being "disconnected" from their body or experiencing mood shifts as their gut-brain axis recalibrates.
The "Rebound" Reality
The biggest question most people have is: What happens when I stop? Research shows us a pretty sobering trend. Because the medication was doing the "heavy lifting" for your metabolism, stopping it without a solid plan can lead to a bit of system shock. Here is what we often see:
Weight Regain: It is common to see about 25% - 66% of the weight lost return, even if you’re trying to maintain healthy lifestyle changes.
The Return of "Food Noise": Many people experience a sharp increase in appetite and a return of intense cravings for sweet or salty foods as the brain's hunger centers "wake up."
A Shift in Metabolic Markers:
Blood Sugar: For those managing blood sugar issues, levels can rise again quite quickly.
Heart Health: The great improvements we saw in blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammation markers can begin to reverse.
Sensory Changes: Even the positive changes in taste - where you naturally craved healthier foods - can start to fade, making old habits harder to resist.
This isn't meant to be discouraging. It’s simply proof that the medication is a tool, not a cure. This is exactly why we focus so heavily on gut health and muscle protection while you're on the journey - so your body is strong enough to maintain those wins on its own.
How to support yourself (and plan an "exit")
Whether you're on a GLP-1 now or thinking about coming off, you need a strategy. You don't want to just be "thinner" - you want to be metabolically resilient.
Prioritise Protein: This is non-negotiable to protect your muscles.
Keep things moving: We have to support your digestion so you're detoxing daily.
Feed your natural GLP-1: Your body can make this hormone on its own if we give the gut the right fibers and nutrients.
Let's do this together.
I want to help you create a plan that works for the long term. Using functional gut testing, we can see exactly what your microbiome needs to take over the reins. We can work on a plan to support your body while you’re on the medication, or create a safe "exit plan" to help you keep the weight off for good.
